FAQ

Answers to some of the most common questions asked by our customers.

Does it cost money to get an estimate?

All estimates are FREE of charge, and done by our own Bob Sweeney. An estimate is a proposal that is given to our customers that can result in tree services being performed upon approval of the work.

How long does it take to receive an estimate?

It takes approximately two business days at most to receive an estimate. This, of course, depends on how busy we are. If there was just a major storm, then sometimes it can take longer. Bob schedules all of his own estimates, so you should hear from him the same day after calling his cell phone to request an estimate.

How many days upon approval does it take for the crew to come out?

Once you have given Bob the green light he will be calling or emailing you within 1-3 business days. Again, this depends on how busy we are. If we just had a major storm, we can be weeks behind our work in this scenario. We appreciate your patience and value all our customers equally, it’s just that emergency tree service (i.e. trees falling on houses and such) has to take priority over regular work.

Are you licensed & insured?

Yes, we are fully insured and licensed to perform work in the state of Pennsylvania. We can provide a copy of our insurance upon request. Also, for commercial work, we can add your company as additional insured. Feel free to request a Certificate of Insurance from our office anytime. We are insured more than the average for liability and workman’s compensation insurance.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash or checks. We do not ask for payment until work is complete.

Do you haul all the wood & debris?

Yes, most of the time all the wood and debris will be hauled and chipped. The estimate will say otherwise if some wood stays. Sometimes customers like keeping tree limbs, and us hauling only the larger trunk. Most of the time, all the wood and debris is hauled away.

Do you use spikes to prune trees?

No, we do not use spikes to climb live trees for pruning. This is a big no no in the tree care industry. This occurred a lot back in the 80’s, and unfortunately still occurs today. This is a great question to ask and we ask that our customers always ensure whoever they hire to make sure that spikes are not used when pruning – only during tree removals.

Do you top trees?

No, topping trees is also a big no no in the tree industry. Topping trees is bad because it alters the branch structure and integrity of the limbs causing weak branches. Topping is deceiving because at first it might appear that the tree is safer, however, in the long run has serious negative consequences.

When is the best time to prune a tree?

Anytime is really a good time to prune trees. Most trees are best to prune just before bud break, however, it is generally okay to prune trees anytime of the year. We don’t usually recommend pruning evergreen trees unless they are smaller such as Holly or hedge shrubs to be shaped with hand shears. Larger evergreens generally should not be cut. Deciduous trees can be pruned anytime.

What about potential property damages?

Sometimes damages do occur. That is the nature of the tree business; yard damage, siding damage, driveway damage, etc. At Pinecrest Tree Services we are proud to say that our damage costs are extremely low for the high volume of work that we do.

Why did they leave a pile of Stump Grindings?

Grinding Stumps is one of our services. Our work orders specify whether or not grindings will be hauled. Many customers are not aware of this detail. Stump grindings are the shavings (many call them) left over after the stump has been fully ground out. There is usually a separate charge for the grindings to be hauled, versus back-filled and left in the hole. If the stump is large, there is a large pile of grindings left from the grinding. Please be sure to take note on whether or not grindings are to be hauled out is included in your estimate.

Why Should I Care About Native Trees?

Native trees create beautiful landscapes that provide native wildlife with the best habitat and food they need to survive. Native trees also help to protect watersheds and maintain the unique natural heritage of an area. In Philadelphia, and the state of Pennsylvania, our native trees lend a sense of place that is recognized and enjoyed by citizens and visitors from all over the world. If our native trees continue to be replaced with species from other places, the area will lose the natural beauty and resources that define the city of Philadelphia, and the state of Pennsylvania.

Not only do native trees provide benefits to the environment as a whole, they also provide value to you and your backyard. Because these native trees are meant to grow here, they thrive with less maintenance in the right conditions, thereby reducing the need to water, fertilize, and provide care for them. They also serve as pollinators and attract wildlife.
